In Reading we are wrapping up growing our main idea and details skills as we use the meta-cognitive strategy Topic/Subtopic/Details to take notes over the economic activities of Native American tribes in Texas. From there we are transitioning in a a study of text features and how they help build comprehension when reading non-fiction texts. I'd encourage you to check out some non-fiction books with your student and discuss the text features in them as you read together.
In Writing, we are getting deeper into our study of expository texts. This week we are using the strategy boxes and bullets to plan an expository opinion piece about "Our favorite...". Once we have gone through the planning process students will begin to draft their essays. You can help at home by asking your kiddo what they have chosen to write about and talking it through with them.
In Texas History we are continuing are study of the Native American tribes of Texas. Specifically we are studying the economic activities of the Caddo, Karnakawa, Jumano, and Lipan Apache Tribes. I'm excited about what we are learning this week because we have been able to directly tie it into our Reading instruction. Students will be working with main idea and details and then they will create a Google Slideshow showcasing each tribe and their knowledge of the text features we have covered in Reading.
