Last week I took a couple of days off and headed home to see my family because I won't be able to be with them for Thanksgiving. I'm so proud of how all of my students behaved and how hard they worked during that time. They did a great job and allowed me to have a stress free trip.
This week we have wrapped up poetry writing and are moving into a biographical research project in Writing class. Students will choose a biography to read from my supply of books and take notes on the individual they have chosen to research. After the break they will turn these into full fledged papers.
In Reading students are exploring the differences between biographies and autobiographies. They are also working on some skills that will help them with their research in Writing. Specifically they will be learning how to differentiate between facts in books that are important and those that are just there to be interesting. This could be a great discussion point with your students if you are reading nonfiction books together at home.
In Texas History we are wrapping up the colonization of Texas under Mexican rule. Students have learned quite a bit about this. Ask them about Stephen F. Austin and the Old 300. They can also tell you all about the rules that settlers had to follow when they moved to Mexican Texas from the United States.
I hope that you have a great week.
